Chandigarh: In a horrific incident, a man was mauled to death by lions at Chhatbir Zoo in Punjab’s Zirakpur on Sunday. A video has come to the fore showing the petrifying moment when a lion was dragging the man. The video was shot from a bus ferrying visitors in Lion Safari.

The video shows that as the travellers noticed the incident, they shouted for help. On Sunday, the man had entered the enclosure by scaling a 25-feet wall. He was attacked by a lion and a lioness as soon as he crossed over.

As per the zoo's field director M Sudhagarb, a five-member team has been formed to probe the incident. “It will find out how this incident happened and what was the motive of the man? It will also suggest measures to be taken to prevent such incidents in future," said Sudhagarb.

"It will also probe any lapse on the part of any zoo official," Sudhagarb said. The team has five-day time to submit its report.

The lion and the lioness have been kept under observation for two to three days to check any behavioural change in them.

In a bid to avert any such incident, the authorities will deploy more security men in and around the zoo, home to four lions, and install more CCTVs.

"We want to close the visibility part of the boundary wall of lion safari. Moreover, we want permanent security team near lion safari to monitor the vulnerable points," Sudhagarb said.

The identity of the deceased is not known yet.
